Troubleshooting
Problems that can arise with chain wax:
Here we address known problems in connection with hot and liquid wax. In the following, these will be explained and, if possible, resolved.
Problems in connection with hot wax:
1. General:
Does the chain still run roughly, loudly, and do the chain links feel sticky after 50km of break-in?
Then the chain was most likely not degreased correctly. Place the chain in a pot and boil in water for 15 minutes. Oil and wax will dissolve, then degrease again with brake cleaner, let it air dry, and re-wax!
2. Hot wax: The chain gets louder before 800-1000km? Then the wax was too hot before removing the chain or the wax was too cold when inserted (air bubbles should rise).
3. Assembly problems: Derailleur pulleys are directional (rattles if incorrectly assembled), additionally there is a metal pin in the derailleur between the two derailleur pulleys. The chain must not run over it.
4. Worn components: In a large number of cases, worn components have led to increased noise. Chain wax, in particular, reacts more sensitively to wear, and differently worn components especially cause problems.
5. The chain is very dark to black from the outside after removal from the wax bath. The chain must be wiped back and forth a bit in the wax bath before removal. The additive is then rinsed off the surface and the chain comes out of the pot shiny silver.
Problems in connection with liquid wax
- The chain squeaks? Then the chain wax does not seem to have penetrated the chain correctly, the chain runs dry. Either it should only be re-lubricated normally, or there are problems with the absorption behavior of the chain wax => try with more chain wax.
- The chain rattles? There were assembly errors with the derailleur pulleys or the chain is routed over the metal pin between the derailleur pulleys.
- Worn components: In a large number of cases, worn components have led to increased noise. Chain wax, in particular, reacts more sensitively to wear, and differently worn components especially cause problems.
